Clever Sourdough Starter Name Ideas
Share
Naming a sourdough starter is a fun and quirky tradition that many bakers enjoy for a few different reasons. While it may seem like an odd practice, there are actually a few practical and sentimental reasons why people choose to name their starters:
1. Personal Connection & Sentimentality
2. A Sense of Ownership
3. Tradition & Fun
4. Community & Storytelling
5. A Legacy
6. It Makes Feeding Your Starter Fun!
Let’s face it—baking can be a lot of work, and having a starter with a name adds a bit of fun and whimsy to the daily routine of feeding it. Instead of just thinking of it as a task, you might start thinking of it as a responsibility to care for “Bob” or “Betty.” This playful attitude can make the process more enjoyable.
I chose to name my sweet starter "Pansita" for a few reasons.
- The most obvious one would be that "pan" means bread in Spanish. I'm Dominican and keeping my culture tied into this was very important to me.
- My husband was dealing with some digestive issues and his (amazing) longevity doctor told him "no bread, unless its homemade sourdough bread". "Pansa" translates to tummy, and all the healing (of the body or heart) must go through the stomach.
- And in Spanish, you add "-ita" to the end of nouns to make them "little" or "cute". It adds a touch of endearment to her name, and Pansita is very dear to me.
Now, let's find the perfect name for your newest family member!
